About LAT Department

Sharpen your skills and feed your soul with the LAT department

The Department of Literature and Theatre encourages students to experience some of the world’s greatest literary, theatrical and filmic works while pursuing a university degree. From Beowulf to Shakespeare, James Joyce to Angela Carter, from Sophocles to The Vagina Monologues, from silent film of the 1920s to art cinema of the 2000s you will be exposed to the finest achievements of human creativity.

LAT faculty will help you master essential skills in writing, critical thinking, analytical reasoning, performance and public speaking, and through the rigorous study of literary, dramatic and visual texts. You can also tap into your creative side though our creative writing, theatre production and film making. There are over 40 courses to choose from, but the LAT department offers more than just coursework. In LAT you can join in theatrical productions, the reading club, and see your own poetry and fiction in print by submitting to LAT’s “Filitsa Sofianou-Mullen Creative Writing Competition as well as the department’s publication, Fly in the Head

We invite you to take advantage of the breadth of experiences we offer, both through our general education courses and through our degree programs. LAT is home to the Literature Major, Self-Designed Majors in Film and Theatre Studies and minors in Film and Theatre Studies and Creative Writing.
