Freedom House is an independent watchdog organization dedicated to the expansion of freedom around the world, including media freedom.

The mission of RWB is to continuously monitor attacks on freedom of information worldwide; to denounce any such attacks in the media; to act in cooperation with governments to fight censorship and laws aimed at restricting freedom of information.

Free Press Unlimited works to ensure that reliable news and information are and remain available to people across the globe. Particularly people in countries where there is little to no press freedom. By supporting local media professionals and journalists, Free Press Unlimited helps to enable as many people as possible to gain and keep access to the information they require to survive and develop.

IREX’s work with local partners advances media professionalism, sustainability, sound media laws, and the local institutions that support independent media and journalists.
IREX research in media development, including the Media Sustainability Index, helps inform policymakers, academics, and media practitioners throughout the world as they seek ways to expand citizens’ access to information.

The European Journalism Centre (EJC) is an independent, international, non-profit foundation dedicated to the highest standards in journalism, inter alis through the further training of journalists and media professionals. Building on its extensive international network, the Centre operates as a facilitator and partner in a wide variety of journalism related projects.

Across Europe, the AEJ brings together individual journalists through their membership of national sections. As an independent and self-funding association they promote critical journalism in the European integration process; and defend the freedom of information and freedom of the press in Europe.

The OSCE monitors media developments in its participating States for violations of freedom of expression. This includes reviewing legislation regulating the media, as well as monitoring cases where journalists are prosecuted for their professional activities or are the victims of harassment. The OSCE also engages in media development through training and support for editors and journalists.

The European Journalism Observatory (EJO) disseminates research and analysis on journalism and on the global media industry.
It forges connections between journalism cultures across Europe and the U.S.. It promotes dialogue between media researchers and practitioners. It brings the results of media research to the people who deal with and work in the media.
It aims to improve the quality of journalism, contribute to a richer understanding of media, and to foster press freedom and media accountability.

Publishes a paper that defines indicators of media development in line with the priority areas of the International Programme for the Development of Communication (IPDC): promotion of freedom of expression and media pluralism; development of community media; and human resource development (capacity building of media professionals and institutional capacity building).

Freedom and pluralism of the media, including independent media governance, are key elements for enabling the exercise of freedom of expression, which constitutes one of the essential foundations of the European Union.

The European Union's commitment to respect freedom and pluralism of the media, as well as the right to information and freedom of expression is enshrined in Article 11 of the Charter of Fundamental Rights, similar to the provision of Article 10 of the European Convention for the Protection of Human Rights and Fundamental Freedoms.
