Information Literacy: Major Organizations and Documents

The Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL), a division of the American Library Association, is a professional association of academic librarians and other interested individuals. It is dedicated to enhancing the ability of academic library and information professionals to serve the information needs of the higher education community and to improve learning, teaching, and research.

The primary purpose of the information literacy section of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions is to foster international cooperation in the development of information literacy education in all types of libraries and information institutions.

UNESCO’s Information for All Programme looks at providing accessibility and equity to information availability and education surrounding information use for everyone across countries.

The Council of Europe is involved in monitoring important aspects of media and information literacy as they relate to questions of ethics, civic responsibility and education in schools.
