Freshmen Survival Guide: Locations

Welcome, Freshmen! Here you will find all you need to know for your first visit in the Library!

How to Locate Books in the Library

STEP 1: Panitza Library uses the Library of Congress Classification system. This classification scheme is by subject. Each book is assigned a special call number according to that system. This number serves as the address of the book on the shelves. When you find a book in the catalog, write down or take a picture with your phone of its call number so that you can easily find it on the shelves.

Next step: Check the location of the book.

Other locations

Keep in mind to always check the location of the book as not all books are in the general circulation collection.

Some books might be in the Reference Collection, Storage, Special collection or Large books collection. Consult the tables on the right next to each OPAC computer in the Library to see where the specific collection is located.

Guide to Call Numbers and Locations

STEP 2: Once you locate the call number, first check the table below to see on which floor you have to go. You can find this table next to the each of the OPAC computers in the Library, or you can consult the maps located by the elevator. There are 4 floors in the Library: Basement, Ground Floor, First Floor, and Second Floor. Once you go to the specific floor, you will have other labels that will help you locate the book on the shelves. If you are still not sure where the book you're looking for is located - ask a librarian.
