Steps of Research: Step 2: Finding Background Information

Why Use Background Information?

Sources will help you:

* understand the broader context of your research;

* become familiar with terminology and jargon used in specific research areas. Knowing the words experts use will help you craft a better search when you begin searching for information in books and scholarly journals;

* put your topic into some perspective;

* refine your topic by providing you with a specific angle that you want to develop for your topic;

* identify keywords;

* find additional sources in the bibliographies. Following up on sources cited in bibliographies, you can generate a surprisingly large number of books and articles on your topic in a relatively short time.

Most Common Background Sources

The most common background sources (also called reference sources) are:

  • Encyclopedias
  • Dictionaries
  • Handbooks
  • Yearbooks
  • Textbooks
  • Atlases
  • Newspapers

How to Find Background Sources

Search the Panitza Library catalog to find reference sources - either general or related to your topic. You can set Filters to search spesifically for reference sources.

The Reference Collection (more than 3,000 titles) is situated on the Ground Floor of the Library. The books can be recognized by having Ref in front of their Call Numbers.

In addition to the print reference sources, you can search the electronic ones subscribed by the Library:

Encyclopedia Britannica

Oxford Reference Online
